Sika, Than (Sun)

Ortiz’s ongoing series Revolt 1680/2180 transports the events of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 —during which the Pueblos of New Mexico successfully united to oust their Spanish overlords—500 years into the future, a dystopian world where time travelers and interstellar warriors keep watch over the past, present, and future. Ortiz originally conceived Revolt 1680/2180 to teach Pueblo history within his own community. It has since evolved into an epic work of science fiction that explores themes of justice, resistance, and resilience through historical figures reimagined as futuristic heroes and brought to life through sculpture, photography, video, and fashion design.

The Sirens synthesize portals for time travel and defend Pueblo youth from the perils of war by assigning each child a Sika, a half-simian, half-canine tetrapod to protect them. Meanwhile, the Recon Watchmen covertly surveil the Earth to detect the movements of the Castilians, an imperialist force bent on destroying Pueblo culture. Donning helmets with Stargate crests and armed with impenetrable ha’pons (war shields), the Recon Watchmen seal off pathways and portals to prevent Castilian encroachments and to protect the clay, language, and culture of their Pueblo brethren.
