Convergence

Defenders Descend from Portal to Pueblo

Virgil Ortiz’s Revolt 1680/2180 epic saga opens a new portal to unleash his latest series, Convergence — a new body of large-scale raku-fired sculptures emblazoned with bold-colored glazes and unexpected textures. Ortiz teams up with artist Juan de Dios in his stunning homeland of Cuernavaca, Mexico — the perfect location to design, imagine, and create time-traveling warriors, the Recon Watchmen. Their mission: safeguarding the Pueblo people's past, present, and future and ensuring their survival and perseverance against the threat of the Castilian Army encroaching on the Pueblo lands.

The sculpting on the busts is sleek and smooth; others have texturized surface details; acid patina finishing (applied while the clay body is scorching hot) and the crackle glaze combined with a black base created by smoke, bring Ortiz's characters to life in a formidable way. Convergence is Ortiz’s latest chapter; Po’pay calls upon his allies from the Pueblos to converge in Taos for a secret meeting—their purpose: to rise against the Castilian invaders. Victory is within reach if all goes according to plan...

Ortiz teaches Pueblo history to multiple generations of viewers worldwide, telling the story of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt by introducing a cast of superheroes he has created over the years through a series of works, busts, and now live actors portraying the characters in the story.

Late Summer of the Castilian Year 1680. Po’Pay has called his allies from the pueblos to converge in Taos for a secret meeting. Their purpose: to rise up against the oppressive Castilian invaders.

Little do the delegates know, their descendents in 2180 are facing a similar threat, and have heard Po'Pay call for aid. Tahu, along with her Blind Archers and the Recon Watchmen have traveled back in time to assist in the uprising, pledging their aid and delivering ceramic armor and weaponry.

Backed by the Recon Watchmen, Po’Pay and the delegates devise a secret plan to rise up as one on the same day, entrusting the secret with two young runners, Omtua and Catua, and their counterparts from 2180.

Ortiz embraces the energy of opening the portal to unveil the first Recon Watchman from the Convergence series.
